The Top 10 Minnesota Walleye Lakes

#1 Best Overall

Mille Lacs Lake

Photos: Northern Angler Co

Size-132,516 acres
Location-Central MN
Best Season- Year Round
Water Clarity- Crystal Clear

Mille Lacs Lake is Minnesota’s most iconic walleye fishery and for good reason. At over 132,000 acres it’s one of the largest lakes in the state, and it produces walleye year round unlike almost any other Midwest fishery. The crystal clear water can make fishing challenging at times — but it also means the fish are healthy, well fed, and hard fighting when you do connect.

From the Water: I’ve fished Mille Lacs my whole life and there’s no lake quite like it. The crystal clear water is beautiful but it will humble you — presentation matters more here than almost anywhere else in Minnesota. Get your technique dialed in and the rewards are incredible.
Spring

Vertical jigging with a jig head and minnow or slip bobber fishing are the most effective presentations. Minnows are the top bait in the spring. Run Lindy rigs or bottom bouncers during the day when fish move to the flats.

Summer

Lead core trolling is the go-to during the day. Running Lindy rigs on the sand flats on the north end produces well. Nightcrawlers and leeches are the top summer baits. Follow up with slip bobber fishing around rock reefs in the evening.

Fall

Same tactics as spring — vertical jigging and bobber fishing with minnows are most effective as water temps drop and walleye return to shallower structure.

Winter

Some of the best ice fishing in Minnesota. Rock reefs produce in the morning and evening. Fish roam the flats during midday — follow them with a jig and minnow.

Pro Tip: The crystal clear water on Mille Lacs demands finesse. Drop down to 6lb fluorocarbon leader and use natural colored jigs. Switch your bait with the seasons — minnows in spring and fall, crawlers and leeches in summer.

#2 World Class

Lake of the Woods

Lake of the Woods Minnesota

Size- 950,000+ acres
Location- Northern MN
Best Season- Year Round
Water Clarity- Moderate

Lake of the Woods is one of the premier walleye destinations in North America. Straddling the Minnesota-Canada border, this massive fishery covers nearly a million acres and produces walleye in numbers and sizes that few lakes anywhere can match. If you’re a serious walleye angler and you haven’t fished Lake of the Woods, it belongs on your bucket list.

Spring

Slip bobber fishing and vertical jigging on rocky reefs and points produce well right after ice out. Live minnows are the top bait early in the season.

Summer

Trolling crankbaits along the mud flats and weed edges is the most consistent summer presentation. Bottom bouncing with spinner rigs also produces well.

Fall

Walleye feed aggressively before winter. Jigging and live bait on main lake structure produces trophy fish in the fall.

Winter

World class ice fishing destination. Hundreds of ice houses line the frozen lake each winter targeting the incredible walleye population.

Pro Tip: Focus on the south shore around Baudette for the most accessible walleye action. The mud flats and rocky reefs in 12-18 feet of water are prime spring territory.

#3 Big Fish Water

Leech Lake

Size- 111,527 acres
Location- North Central MN
Best Season- Spring & Fall
Water Clarity- Moderate

Leech Lake is one of Minnesota’s largest lakes and one of its finest walleye fisheries. Known for producing big fish alongside consistent numbers, Leech Lake attracts serious walleye anglers from across the Midwest every season. The combination of rocky reefs, sandy flats, and extensive weed structure gives walleye everything they need to thrive — and gives anglers a variety of presentations to work with.

Spring

Rocky points and reefs hold walleye right after opener. Jig and minnow or slip bobber presentations work best in the shallows early in the season.

Summer

Trolling crankbaits along main lake structure and weed edges produces well. Bottom bouncing with spinner rigs on the sandy flats is also very effective.

Fall

Some of the best walleye fishing of the year. Fish move shallow and feed aggressively before winter sets in.

Winter

Excellent ice fishing with a strong walleye population that responds well to jigging spoons and live minnows.

Pro Tip: The Boy Bay area on the east side of Leech Lake is one of the most productive walleye spots on the entire lake in the spring. Focus on rocky points and inside turns coming off the main lake.

#4 Trophy Water

Lake Vermilion

Photos: Northern Angler Co

Size- 40,557 acres
Location- Northeast MN
Best Season- Spring & Fall
Water Clarity- Low/Stained

Lake Vermilion is one of the most beautiful lakes in Minnesota and one of the finest walleye fisheries in the state. With over 1,200 miles of shoreline, 365 islands, and stunning Northwoods scenery, Vermilion feels more like a Canadian fly-in destination than a Minnesota drive-to lake. The water carries a natural reddish stain and low clarity that actually works in the angler’s favor — walleye are less line shy and more willing to commit to a presentation.

From the Water: I’ve spent a good chunk of the last 5-6 years on Vermilion and the views keep drawing me back as much as the fishing. If there weren’t cabins on that lake you’d think you were on a fly-in trip in Canada. The walleye fishing is every bit as good as it looks on a map.
Spring

Trolling crankbaits shallow along rocky shorelines and points is deadly right after opener. Vertical jigging the main lake with a jig head and minnow also produces well.

Summer

Trolling crankbaits with downriggers is the most effective summer presentation for reaching suspended walleye. Lead core trolling works well if you don’t have downriggers.

Fall

Same as spring — shallow crankbait trolling and vertical jigging both produce well as walleye move back to shallower structure before ice up.

Winter

Excellent ice fishing on the main lake bays. Jigging and tip-ups with live minnows produce consistent walleye through the ice.

Pro Tip: Don’t have downriggers? Lead core trolling is a great alternative for getting deep on Vermilion in the summer. 3-5 colors of lead core gets you down to most walleye during the warm water months.

#5 Numbers Lake

Upper Red Lake

Upper Red Lake Minnesota

Size- 107,800 acres
Location- Northwest MN
Best Season- Spring & Summer
Water Clarity- Stained

Upper Red Lake is one of the most productive walleye fisheries in Minnesota. After a remarkable recovery from overfishing in the early 2000s, Upper Red Lake is back to producing incredible numbers of walleye. Note that Upper Red Lake is tribally managed by the Red Lake Band of Chippewa — be sure to check current access and licensing requirements before your trip. The stained water means walleye are less line shy and more aggressive — making it one of the most forgiving lakes on this list for anglers of all skill levels.

Pro Tip: The stained water on Upper Red Lake means you can get away with heavier line and brighter colored jigs. Chartreuse and orange are top producers here — colors that would spook walleye on clear water lakes like Mille Lacs work great on Red Lake.
Spring

Jigging and bobber fishing produce well right after opener. The stained water keeps walleye active longer into the morning and evening bite windows.

Summer

Trolling spinner rigs and crankbaits along the shallow flats produces consistent walleye all summer long.

Fall

Excellent fall fishing as walleye feed up before winter. Jigging and live bait on main lake structure are the top presentations.

Winter

Outstanding ice fishing destination. The shallow stained water keeps walleye active and catchable all winter long.

#6 Border Water

Rainy Lake

Size- 222,000+ acres
Location- Northern MN
Best Season- Spring & Summer
Water Clarity- Clear-Moderate

Rainy Lake sits on the Minnesota-Canada border within Voyageurs National Park and offers a true wilderness walleye experience. The rugged Canadian Shield shoreline, countless islands, and remote bays make Rainy Lake feel completely untouched — and the walleye fishing matches the setting. Trophy fish are caught regularly and the scenery alone is worth the trip north.

Pro Tip: Rainy Lake has an incredible smallmouth bass population alongside its walleye — bring gear for both and you’ll have a memorable trip regardless of which species is most active.
Spring

Rocky points and reefs hold walleye right after ice out. Jigging and slip bobber fishing with live minnows are the top early season presentations.

Summer

Trolling crankbaits along main lake structure and rocky Canadian Shield shorelines produces well. Evening jigging in the shallows can be exceptional.

Fall

Fall fishing on Rainy Lake is outstanding. Walleye stack up on main lake points and reefs before winter and respond well to jigging and live bait.

Winter

Remote ice fishing experience within Voyageurs National Park. Trophy walleye are caught through the ice regularly each winter.

#7 Northwoods Classic

Lake Winnibigoshish

Size- 58,544 acres
Location- North Central MN
Best Season- Summer & Fall
Water Clarity- Moderate

Lake Winnibigoshish — known to locals simply as “Winni” — is a classic Northwoods Minnesota walleye lake that has been producing fish for generations of Midwest anglers. The large open water lake with its sandy flats, rocky humps, and extensive weed lines gives walleye a full menu of habitat and gives anglers a full menu of presentations to work with. Winni is connected to Leech Lake via the Mississippi River making it part of one of the best walleye fishing systems in the state.

Pro Tip: The sandy humps and gravel bars on the northwest end of Winni are prime summer walleye structure. Troll crankbaits and spinner rigs along the edges of these humps in 12-18 feet of water for consistent summer action.
Spring

Jigging and live bait on rocky shorelines and points produce well at opener. The Mississippi River inlet on the east end holds walleye early in the season.

Summer

Trolling is the top summer presentation on Winni. Cover water along the sandy humps and weed edges to find active fish.

Fall

Excellent fall fishing as walleye fatten up before winter. Jigging the rocky main lake structure produces well in the fall.

Winter

Strong ice fishing tradition on Winni. The sandy flats and rocky humps that hold summer walleye produce well through the ice.

#8 Wilderness Gem

Lake Kabetogama

Size- 25,760 acres
Location- Northern MN
Best Season- Spring & Summer
Water Clarity- Clear

Lake Kabetogama sits entirely within Voyageurs National Park and offers one of the most unique walleye fishing experiences in Minnesota. The remote wilderness setting, Canadian Shield geology, and pristine water quality make Kab a bucket list destination for Midwest walleye anglers. Trophy walleye are caught regularly and the lake gets far less pressure than bigger name fisheries — making it a hidden gem worth the drive north.

Pro Tip: Kabetogama is subject to special regulations within Voyageurs National Park — check the current rules carefully before your trip and plan your fishing approach accordingly.
Spring

Rocky Canadian Shield shorelines hold walleye right after ice out. Jigging and slip bobber fishing with live minnows are the top early season presentations.

Summer

Trolling crankbaits along rocky structure and deep weed edges produces consistent walleye. Evening jigging in the shallows can be outstanding.

Fall

Trophy walleye fishing in the fall. Fish stack up on main lake points and feed aggressively before ice up.

Winter

Remote ice fishing within Voyageurs National Park. A true wilderness ice fishing experience with excellent walleye action.

#9 Connected System

Cass Lake

Cass Lake Minnesota

Size- 15,596 acres
Location- North Central MN
Best Season- Spring & Summer
Water Clarity- Moderate

Cass Lake is part of the same connected lake system as Winnibigoshish and offers excellent walleye fishing in a more intimate setting. The Mississippi River connects Cass to Winni and the surrounding lake system creating a walleye migration corridor that concentrates fish at key times of year. Cass Lake has a strong local following and consistently produces quality walleye for anglers who know the lake.

Pro Tip: The channel connecting Cass Lake to the rest of the Mississippi River system is a walleye magnet in the spring. Fish the current seams and eddies with a jig and minnow for some of the best early season action on the system.
Spring

The river channels and current areas concentrate walleye early in the season. Jigging and slip bobber fishing in these current areas produces well.

Summer

Trolling the main lake basin and rocky structure produces consistent summer walleye. Evening jigging on the points is also effective.

Fall

Good fall fishing as walleye move to main lake structure before winter. Jigging and live bait are the top presentations.

Winter

Solid ice fishing lake with consistent walleye action through the ice on jigging presentations.

#10 Metro Surprise

Lake Minnetonka

Size- 14,528 acres
Location- Metro MN
Best Season- Spring & Fall
Water Clarity- Moderate-Clear

Lake Minnetonka surprises a lot of anglers who write it off as a metro lake. While it gets heavy recreational traffic in the summer, Minnetonka has a quality walleye population that produces well for anglers who time their trips right. The spring and fall seasons before and after the heavy boat traffic are prime time — and for Twin Cities anglers who don’t want to make the drive north it’s a legitimate walleye destination right in their backyard.

Pro Tip: Fish Lake Minnetonka early in the morning on weekdays to avoid the recreational boat traffic. The spring bite right after opener and the fall bite in September and October are the most productive times to target walleye on Minnetonka.
Spring

Excellent walleye fishing right after opener before the summer crowds arrive. Rocky points and main lake structure hold fish early in the season.

Summer

Heavy recreational traffic makes summer fishing challenging. Early morning and late evening on weekdays are the best times to target walleye.

Fall

One of the best times to fish Minnetonka. Reduced boat traffic and aggressive feeding walleye make fall a prime season on this metro lake.

Winter

Solid ice fishing close to the Twin Cities. A convenient option for metro anglers who want walleye action without a long drive.

Tips for Fishing Minnesota Walleye Lakes

  • Match your bait to the season: Minnows dominate in the spring and fall when water is cold. Switch to nightcrawlers and leeches in the summer when water warms up — walleye key on different forage throughout the season.
  • Match your gear to water clarity: Clear water lakes like Mille Lacs require lighter line, smaller jigs, and more natural colors — the fish can see everything. Stained water lakes like Vermilion and Red Lake allow heavier gear and brighter colors like chartreuse and orange that would spook fish in clearer conditions.
  • Follow the low light windows: Minnesota walleye are most active at dawn and dusk across every lake on this list. Plan to be on the water at first light and stay through the evening bite for the best action.
  • Match your presentation to the depth: Jigging and slip bobbers work best in shallow water under 15 feet. Trolling crankbaits and lead core takes over in deeper water during the summer months.
  • Check regulations before you go: Each lake on this list has its own specific walleye regulations including size limits, possession limits, and seasonal restrictions. Always check the current Minnesota DNR fishing regulations before your trip.

Final Verdict

Minnesota has no shortage of world class walleye fishing — from the legendary big water of Mille Lacs and Lake of the Woods to the stunning Northwoods setting of Lake Vermilion and the wilderness experience of Voyageurs National Park. Whether you’re targeting numbers, trophy fish, or just looking for a beautiful place to wet a line, Minnesota’s top walleye lakes deliver on every front.
